The Tuscola CUSD #301 understands our decision to open or close schools in bad weather has a big effect on families. We also understand our students are better served – academically and socially – by being in school.
However, as always, our top priority is the safety of our students.
Please understand we make the decision to open or close schools in bad weather based on a careful analysis of all relevant factors.
As superintendent of schools, I am responsible for the final decision, but my decision is based upon recommendations from our bus company, county road commissioner, and other factors such as:
Information on road conditions from transportation staff and police The amount of snow and ice accumulated Will precipitation continue throughout the day? Will roads be clear by the time we dismiss? Parking lot conditions Temperature and Wind Chill Weather predictions
The last one is the toughest. I have to take weather conditions into account, but I also can’t make decisions based on what “might” happen.
In my experience, there are three things that people don’t always realize.
One, busses often handle better in winter conditions than smaller vehicles.
Two, I receive about 5 times as many complaints for cancelling school as I do when we are in attendance. I do my best not to make last minute decisions that affect families who need babysitters.
Lastly, I don’t feel obligated to cancel just because a neighboring school district isn’t in attendance. I have to make the best decision for our students and staff.
A decision to cancel generally has to be made by 6:00 am.
